Goal of ISO/IEC 17025:2017
Overview
ISO/IEC 17025 was first issued in 1999 by ISO and IEC. It has become the single most important standard for testing and calibration laboratories globally, with more than 50,000 laboratories accredited. The standard was developed with the goal of promoting confidence in the performance of laboratories, showing that they are competent and that they provide valid and unbiased, valid results with a minimal margin or error.
Provide a basis for use by accreditation bodies in assessing the competence of laboratories
Overall, the standard is here to provide laboratories a framework to promote confidence, and to enable them to demonstrate that they in fact are unbiased, and provide valid results. This allows accredited bodies to assess the competence of your laboratory and grant you ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.
Establish general requirements for demonstrating lab compliance to perform specific tests or calibrations
The requirements are for any organization that performs any testing and/or calibration, and/or sampling that is associated with testing or calibration. The laboratory needs to demonstrate that they have an effective process for testing, sampling and calibration and that their results are unbiased and valid. In order to be valid they quality of sampling has to be assured. The standards main requirements are from clause 4 to 8. These clauses give specific instructions for how to become ISO/IEC 17025:2017 compliant, giving your lab credentials and becoming more competitive.
Assist in the development and implementation of a lab’s quality system.
ISO/IEC 17025 is a standard aimed at improving and maintaining a lab’s quality system. Clause 4 through 8 provide the organization with requirements that assists in developing the lab’s quality management system. When you conform to ISO/IEC 17025, it is also easy to conform to ISO 9001.
